This year we are pleased to once again offer full-service fencing packages. These packages include:

  • 1 roll of fence
  • 10 posts
  • 30 zip ties (for anchoring the fence to the stakes)
  • 5 white pine seedlings – (Seedlings donated by Rajala Woods Foundation.)
  • Delivery, planting and fencing of the seedlings

Limit 1 package per applicant. If you would like to purchase additional rolls of fencing you can either install it yourself or set up a separate contract with the planter. You must complete a Fencing Only application in addition to this application.

NEW FOR 2021

Online payment by credit card or check (ACH) is required when you submit this form. Payment is via ProPay. No Refunds.

Recruit a neighbor to purchase fencing and you are eligible for a free roll! This neighbor must be new to the program and complete an online application. They must give your name as the reference for their participation. Supplies are limited.

White pine and northern white cedar are the focus of the program.  The program’s objective is to help restore white pine and white cedar trees to the north shore landscape.

This package includes 5 white pine seedlings. Landowners are responsible for procuring additional seedlings beyond the 5 seedlings included in the package. A list of sources can be found here.  It is important to ORDER YOUR SEEDLINGS EARLY as nurseries often run out of white pine and white cedar, which are in high demand. (Do not wait to see if you get fencing. If you meet our qualifications, you will probably receive fencing.)

The full-service package includes pick-up and delivery of one roll of fencing. If you order additional rolls, you are responsible for picking them up.

Participant Eligibility and Requirements

Program is for private landowners living within the NSFC area – from Lake/St. Louis County Boundary to the Canadian Border, and from the shore of Lake Superior to 3 miles inland). Landowners in St. Louis County within 3 miles of Lake Superior, east of the Lester River, are also eligible. Businesses, organizations, governments, and schools are not eligible for the program.

Double reimbursement is not allowed.  Landowners participating in this program cannot claim reimbursement from MN DNR for the trees fenced with NSFC materials.

Documentation of tree planting and completing a survey is required as part of the program. As in past years, photo documentation is required to complete your agreement to participate in the program.

Do not wait until the last possible moment to order trees, to apply for the program, or to pick up your materials.

Additional Information

Each 50 foot roll will provide for 3-5 individual tree enclosures, or 1 small area enclosure. We suggest that 10 to 15 individual enclosures be used per acre and be widely spaced and placed where there is an opening in the overstory created where a large tree has died.  Leave your fencing around the tree(s) until they are at least 6 feet tall. The fencing is being provided specifically for protecting white pine and white cedar tree seedlings/saplings.

For answers to your planting and fencing questions, please contact Dana Dickson. Dana is a landowner with years of experience planting and fencing trees on the North Shore.

Program History

This is the sixth year we are offering this program.  In the first five years, 488 program participants planted and fenced over 12,709 white pine and white cedar trees on their properties along the shore.  These same individuals planted an additional 47,565 young trees, including white spruce, which do not require fencing.  This program helps promote the mission of the collaborative, which is:  To revitalize and maintain a healthy and functioning ecosystem along the North Shore of Lake Superior with emphasis on restoring and maintaining native trees and associated forest communities.

This program is funded by a generous grant from the Weekes Family Foundation.
